Report of the Event
Vatavaran, the umbrella committee of Maitreyi College, organised a hands-on training workshop on “Bio-Enzymes: Transforming Waste into Wealth” to promote awareness about sustainable waste management, environmental responsibility and green entrepreneurship.
The programme commenced with Vandana and Lamp Lighting. Prof. Jyoti Singh, Vice-Principal, welcomed the participants and felicitated the resource person with a Tulsi plant. The programme was organised under the guidance of Principal Prof. Haritma Chopra and coordinated by Prof. Ramesh Kumari.
Mrs. Swati Singh introduced students to the concept and applications of bio-enzymes and explained how fruit and vegetable waste can be converted into useful biological products. She highlighted the environmental concerns associated with excessive use of harsh chemicals in everyday cleaning and personal-care products and discussed safer, sustainable alternatives.
A practical demonstration was conducted using citrus peels, jaggery and water, explaining the basic process of fermentation and the potential applications of the resulting bio-enzyme. Students also learned how household organic waste can be treated as a resource rather than waste.
The session included examples of bio-enzyme initiatives from Thailand and Indonesia, helping students understand the wider environmental and agricultural applications of this approach.
The workshop was highly interactive, with students actively participating and raising questions. The session also connected sustainability with skill development, entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities. Students were introduced to further training and internship opportunities through the Bio Enzymes Entrepreneurs Academy of India.
