Celebrating International Compost Day: Reducing Methane Emissions One Step at a Time - By Yogini Bapat

Did you know that methane gas in the atmosphere has more than doubled in the last 20 years due to human activities? This potent gas has 25 times the heat-trapping ability of CO2 and stays in the atmosphere for 12 years, contributing to the formation of harmful tropospheric ozone, which can even cause premature deaths.

But where does methane come from? The main source is organic waste!

By taking care of our kitchen waste, we can reduce landfill waste, methane emissions, and indirectly, tropospheric ozone and other pollution caused by untreated organic waste. Today, on International Compost Day, I feel lucky to have shared my knowledge of composting with a few of my lovely, enthusiastic friends who live in my apartment.

The Impact of Methane

Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas that, although less prevalent than carbon dioxide (CO2), has a much more significant impact on global warming. Its heat-trapping ability is 25 times greater than CO2 over a 100-year period, making it a critical target in our efforts to combat climate change. When methane is released into the atmosphere, it not only contributes to the greenhouse effect but also forms tropospheric ozone, a dangerous air pollutant that can lead to respiratory problems and premature deaths.

Sources of Methane

A significant source of methane emissions is organic waste, which decomposes anaerobically (without oxygen) in landfills, producing methane as a byproduct. This includes food scraps, yard waste, and other biodegradable materials. By diverting organic waste from landfills through composting, we can significantly reduce methane emissions and their associated impacts on climate and air quality.

Our Composting Workshop

To mark International Compost Day, I organized a small workshop with my apartment neighbors to share the benefits and techniques of composting. The enthusiasm and willingness to learn among my friends were truly inspiring. We discussed the basics of composting, including what materials can be composted, the ideal conditions for composting, and how to maintain a healthy compost pile.

Hands-On Learning and Fun

We didn’t just stop at theoretical knowledge. To make the workshop engaging, we conducted a quiz with eco-friendly prizes, which helped reinforce what we had discussed. It was heartwarming to see everyone participate actively and show genuine interest in learning about composting.

As a token of appreciation and to encourage sustainable living, we gifted everyone with plant-based floor cleaners from @be.__live. These eco-friendly cleaners are not only effective but also help reduce the chemical load on our environment, further promoting a greener lifestyle.

Inspiring a Greener Future

The success of this workshop has filled me with hope. By educating ourselves and others about composting, we can make a tangible difference in our fight against climate change. I am optimistic that my friends will soon embark on their composting journeys, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Join the Movement

As we celebrate International Compost Day, I encourage everyone to start composting at home. It’s a simple yet powerful way to reduce methane emissions, improve soil health, and support sustainable living. Together, we can make a significant impact on our planet’s future.

Let’s take this opportunity to make a change, starting with our kitchen waste. Happy composting!

My First Experience on Stage: A Journey of Mixed Emotions and Personal Growth - By Rachna Singhal

It was a very new and exciting experience full of mixed emotions. Being on the stage for the very first time, taking my first session for the awareness of bioenzyme, gave me goosebumps. Doing all the preparations—from making samples to preparing myself to present—I was very nervous. But the moment I was on stage and started talking to the audience, it went so smoothly.

From talking about what bioenzyme is, how to make it, uses of the product, its benefits, and moving towards a sustainable environment, all the teachers showed great interest. This actually made me feel that every individual has the capability to fly; it is just that you need to grab the opportunity. For this, I would like to thank Priti Rao Ma’am, who motivated me a lot, Mrs. Gitanjali Grover, the school principal, who herself offered me the stage after our first conversation over the topic, and, last but not least, my family, who were continuously helping and supporting me.

Embracing the Challenge

As I stood backstage, waiting for my name to be announced, a whirlwind of emotions swept through me. I had spent weeks preparing for this moment, yet the reality of it felt overwhelming. The task ahead seemed daunting: to educate an audience on the importance of bioenzymes, a topic close to my heart, but one I had never publicly spoken about before.

Bioenzymes are organic solutions produced by the fermentation of fruit and vegetable peels with sugar and water. They are an eco-friendly alternative to chemical cleaners and pesticides, contributing significantly to a sustainable environment. My goal was to raise awareness about these benefits and encourage more people to adopt this practice.

The Preparation Journey

The journey of preparation was intense. From researching the intricacies of bioenzyme production to creating visual aids and samples, every step demanded meticulous attention. I rehearsed my speech countless times, tweaking and refining it until I felt confident. Despite this, the thought of facing a live audience made my heart race.

My mentor, Priti Rao Ma’am, played a crucial role in this phase. Her unwavering support and encouragement were invaluable. She believed in my potential even when I doubted myself, pushing me to step out of my comfort zone. Her guidance was a beacon of light in moments of uncertainty.

Taking the Stage

The moment finally arrived. As I walked onto the stage, a wave of calm washed over me. The sea of faces in the audience seemed less intimidating than I had imagined. With a deep breath, I began my presentation.

I spoke about the origins of bioenzymes, explaining the simple yet effective process of creating them at home. Demonstrating the samples I had prepared, I highlighted their versatility and environmental benefits. The audience's engagement was palpable; their curiosity and interest fueled my confidence.

Impact and Reflection

Seeing the teachers' enthusiastic responses was incredibly rewarding. They asked insightful questions, eager to learn more and implement bioenzymes in their own lives. This interaction reinforced my belief in the power of knowledge sharing and community action.

Reflecting on this experience, I realize that every individual indeed has the capability to fly. Opportunities for growth and learning are all around us; we just need the courage to seize them. I am deeply grateful to Mrs. Gitanjali Grover, the school principal, who recognized my passion and provided me with this platform. Her support was instrumental in making this event possible.

A Heartfelt Thank You

Lastly, I cannot overstate the importance of my family's support throughout this journey. Their constant encouragement and assistance were the pillars of my strength. From helping with the preparation of materials to offering moral support, they were with me every step of the way.

This experience has been a significant milestone in my life. It has taught me the value of perseverance, the importance of community, and the joy of sharing knowledge. I look forward to many more opportunities to spread awareness and contribute to a sustainable future.
